If thou shalt confess
If thou shalt confess
By: Dov Avnon
10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
How should I be saved from the wages of sin (which) is death? There some who argue that the gospel of salvation as Christ gave to Paul in Romans 10:9-10 is different from that one that the same Christ gave to Paul in 1 Cor. 15:1-5
This is very strange teaching coming from those who teach that we should divide Paul's letters into early and prison one or between different groups in his letters.
Many are confusing the subject around CONFEFFESING. There are many wrong teachings around that say that a person should first confess/admit his did and then trust Christ. The reason for this confusion is mixing between Christ words to Paul about confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and the verses below.
ACTS 19:18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds.
JAMES 5:16 confess [your] faults one to another,
1 JOHN 1:9 If we confess our sins
Being save under the dispensation of grace is more easy than you think. I think religion made it complicated not the Bible
So let see what is Christ gave Paul in Romans 10:9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus – Paul is not talking here about confession of sin. Just because CONFESSION is a verb it still not part of the works of the law. What is CONFESSION?
A confession is a statement made by a person acknowledging some fact. Many see confession only in the light of SIN but this is not what Paul is talking about.
LEVITICUS 5:5 And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing NUMBERS 5:7 Then they shall confess their sin which they have done MATTHEW 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
Paul is talking about - if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus. Yes acknowledging the Jesus Christ IS GOD is part of our salvation. Who died for your sins? Who is this JESUS (Gods save). It is God that was on the Cross.
3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost 1 Corinthians chapter 12
There is under this dispensation of Grace only one way of salvation not 2 or 3 there is also under this dispensation of Grace one way of salvation for a Jew and Gentile.
ROMANS 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. PHILIPPIANS 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
the works of the law
Some people are confusing between VERB and the works of the law. Just because faith, confess might be VERB it is not about the works of the law which is circumcision, sacrifice, keeping the Law of mosses.
GALATIANS 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law - GALATIANS 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? -GALATIANS 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? -GALATIANS 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse.
From reading Eph 2:8-9 we are learning that salvation is because of God’s grace just by believing the gospel of our salvation. Paul is saying:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8-9
TITUS 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done…..
GALATIANS 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
What are those works that Paul is talking about? Just because FAITH and CONFESS are verbs means that they are WORKS ? of course not. This is a misunderstanding the subject of THE WORKS of the LAW.
So after we understand that the –confess- in Rom. 10:9-10 is about the acknowledgment that Christ is God let see what Christ through Paul is really teaching us here
10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
The sinner see Romans 3: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; must acknowledge that the one we are talking about IS GOD.
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
The same sinner – Jew or not because under this dispensation of grace all are the same, must belive - that God hath raised him from the dead – Who is the one that God raised from the death? Christ God that also died on the cross.
thou shalt be saved – about which salvation does Paul is talking about?
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:23
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Rom 5:9
So let’s not forget that acknowledgment that Christ is God/Lord is part of our salvation. You are not saved because Christian theology teaches that some man by the name JESUS said that he died for our sins. Your salvation is because you believe that Christ IS GOD who died on the cross for you! You are trusting here GOD and not just a man.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
If you are not able to believe/accept that Christ is GOD – that he is the one that on the cross died for your sins - then your salvation is not complete.
The doctrine of salvation in Paul's letters is built from the following facts. We will not find the details in one letter but the picture is clear.
1- Sin came into the world – Romans 5:12 - Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world
2- All people are sinners – Romans 3: 23 For all have sinned….
3- Sin bring death – Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death….
The only way to be saved from this death is Through The Lord Jesus Christ. But why people need Christ?
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Romans 8:8
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:25
So now after we know what is Christ's place in this salvation plan. Let see what is our part as born sinners. Are we get to save just like this naturally because God loves the world? No! We get saved because God had a special love for the world.
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
You see if God did not take care on the sin issue we were lost.
So what now? what is the word of faith? what is the gospel of our salvation?
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Rom 10
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Cor 15:1-4
1- confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
2- believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead
3- that Christ died for our sins
4- And that he was buried
5- and that he rose again
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians Chapter 2:8-9
to testify the gospel of the grace of God acts 20:24
