Depression the Bible and the dispensation of grace

The source and the solution by Richard Jordan

The source and the solution

II Corinthians is the most personal epistle that Paul wrote. It was written during the darkest hour of his life

Ac:20:1: And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia.
Ac:20:2: And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece,
Ac:20:3: And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.

2 Cor:1:8: For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

2 Co:2:13: I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

This is a classic description of depression.

2 Cor:4:8: We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
2 Cor:4:9: Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

Depression is a universal fact that saint after saint experienced as a reality.

The root cause and real cure to conquer emotional tyranny:

Depression is not where God wants you to be but He wants you to have joy and peace. Depression is the state of feeling sad and dejected, the result of inactivity, self-castigation and dropping out, the opposite of being happy, the state of being down and out.

Three kinds of depression:

1. Mild - discouragement
2. More serious - despondency
3. Most crippling – dispair

Each has its own symptoms you can identify.

1. Mild is mental with self-doubt, self-pity
2. More serious: self-critical, anger and self-pity
3. Despair leads to self-rejection and bitterness, sleeplessness, apathy, unkempt appearance, weeps, pacificity, withdrawal, discontent, irritability, sorrow, loneliness, hopelessness, schizophrenia, abandonment. Dispair spiritually begins with questioning God’s will, ungrateful, rejecting God’s will, anger at God, griping, resentment against God’s Word, indifference, just unbelief.

Symptoms: Self-preservation is the first law of life. Psychology is good at describing the problem but it doesn’t have the truth or doesn’t come to answers about it. Habits leading to a change of mood, changing relationships with others, loss of contact with reality are defense mechanisms. Separation from a love object produces loneliness which result in depression.

Other symptoms are exhibitionism, temper tantrums, withdrawal, excessive gambling, alcoholism, appearance with body piercing (as the heathen do –Leviticus) as a status symbol (please look at me).
The person often feels unworthy (I need to look like a freak because that’s what I think about myself).
Sexual promiscuity, profanity, clinging, excessive generosity to make themselves indispensable, incessant talking, attacking, intimidation, aggression most frequently first on self, and then turning against others, physical pains and weakness, loss of affection, tendency to withdraw from others, unwilling to risk loving and not loving, dangerous emotions, self-occupation, anxiety, fear, worry, (fear and worry go together), wishing to die (Christians say, “I wish the Lord would come.”), just not wanting to cope with the problems of life.

Almost all clinical solutions say depression is caused by external experience. Depression begins with disappointment. You don’t become depressed when everything is going your way. Depression begins with someone not performed according to your expectations (legalism). Depression is the result of lack of self-worth and appreciation of who you really are. Everyone has a breaking point, biological malfunctions after a high point in life, lack of purposeful meaning.

Formula for the pathway to depression: Your emotions are absolutely predictable because of the relationship between your emotions and your thinking process.

Depression always starts out with improper thinking. It starts out in your mind where you start thinking that something ought not to be. The mind is the seed bed.

Two basics: unrealistic expectations and misplaced faith. You live in the real world where people expect things you can’t give and they reject you. Have you ever rejected someone else? Do you have a dependency on the wrong thing? If you put people in bondage you don’t believe Romans 3:23. You are not immune to this present evil world. Proper thinking of truth sets you free. Live is full of insult and rejection.
The Lord has given us a capacity to live through it. Peace is a result of learning to cope with insult, injury and rejection. We have to learn to deal with it God’s way.

The first step toward depression is an event that causes disappointment. At that point you have a choice to respond by faith, walk in the spirit with thanksgiving or choose to respond in the flesh with human viewpoint with fear and anger. Responding by faith with thanksgiving produces peace.

Anger is usually fear in disguise and it leads to despair and depression. Anger sets off a defense mechanism. An angry person ventilates or internalizes it. The more dangerous is the latter. Brooding is an internal struggling and it gets bigger and bigger until it explodes. The proper attitude is to look at the anger. It becomes sin when you focus it on people. Anger is one of the two motivators to deal with. The other is fear.
Changing the circumstances doesn’t work very well because you get madder when that doesn’t help. Anger turns into self-pity. Insult > anger > self-pity > depression.

The one constant in depression is always self-pity. The more self-pity, the more depressed you become. There are two forms of thinking in self-pity:
1. Past thinking where you remember and rehearse the insult.
2 Thinking where you project the insult into the future which results in worry, foreboding and fear about it happening.

If you get rid of self-pity you will get rid of depression. That’s a fact. The solution to depression is to have a renewed mind.

II Cor. 2:13 Paul was depressed about not finding Titus, but in verse 14 he says, “Thanks be to God.” God is sufficient always. Victory in Christ right in the middle of depression. We are living on the victory side. How to get from verse 13 to verse 14?
Paul changed his thinking about what was going on. He took the faith choice in his mind. The problem is in our mind not in the circumstance.
Depression is an emotional state. You must understand that your emotions follow your thinking. They are the responders to the thoughts that are in your mind. They cannot discern reality from fiction. (Watch a scary movie or a love story.)

The real battlefield for your emotions is in your mind. If I am afraid, I am thinking fearful thoughts. Drugs and shock therapy numb your mind and blanks out your memory. The result is temporary.

Romans 12:2
You have to re-educate your thinking so you will think like God thinks. You have two choices:
1. Human viewpoint and religious systems
2. Divine viewpoint – the Word of God

You can change your thinking patterns but not your emotions. Put in things of the world in your mind and that is what affects your emotions. The Word of God will result by faith and there will be action. When the alarm clock rings, you have a choice but should act no matter how you feel about it. How do you do it?

Phil. 6:7,8 By prayer. That’s what you do. You have to do it, not feel like it. Just do it by faith. What happens? You have the peace of God, an emotion which is the opposite of anxiety. Skip the emotion and act on the Word of God, the way God created you to function.

Stopping at the start

1. Improper thinking
2. Misplaced dependency
3. Disappointment, rejection
4. Anger
5. Choice: Self-pity which leads to depression
or Thanksgiving which gives peace

The book of Job is the oldest book in the Bible. Moses quotes Job when Israel is coming out of Egypt.

Job was extremely blessed at the beginning with a great household, health, large family, flocks. He was the greatest of all men of the east. Things changed overnight. He lost his children, his flocks, his health and his wife turned against him.

He had three friends whom he called “miserable counselors.” They came to see him and remained seven days in silence.

Job 3:1-11 Job addresses his friends in self-pity. “Woe is me” is the universal emotional problem. It’s not God’s will for our lives but it happens because of our old man’s pattern of thinking.

Job. 7:1-4, 11-16 Job responds to Eliphaz. I will complain! I loathe my life. The path to depression is already identifiable and predictable.

When you add self-pity to the motivation of fear or anger, you have depression. Self-pity is self- importance caused by improper thinking. Sin and pride have “I” in the middle.

A small percentage of depression is physically induced. The key to the formula of the path to depression is self-pity. The real culprit is your mental attitude toward the circumstance. Self-pity is always involved. There is a relationship between the thinking and the emotions.

You need a Bibical picture of your make-up, how you were designed to function. You are a spirit, a soul and a body. That makes you a human.

1 Thes. 5:23: And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The spirit gives you consciousness of God. God is Spirit. It is your connection with God.

Rom. 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

The soul gives capacity to become conscious of yourself. It is the seat of your personality. You share this with no one else. “Ego” means “I am.”
The body gives capacity to communicate with the world around you.

1Cor:2:11: For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

1Cor:2:16: For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The heart is the mentality and function of the soul.
Proverb:23:7: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

The spirit has capacity of a way of thinking.
The soul has capacity of a way of believing.
Rom:10:10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;

You can know, but not believe in it. The will takes it from the spirit and gives it to the soul. The will decides to take what you know and make it the foundation of the soul.

Matt:26:37: And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

The soul is authored by your old sin nature. The unsaved is a natural man and his spirit is dead toward God.

Eph:2:1: And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph:4:17: This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Eph:4:18: Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Eph:4:19: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
Eph:4:20: But ye have not so learned Christ;

The natural man functions to other things but not to God. What fills the mind of an unsaved man? Philosophical things of the world, ideas from human viewpoint, lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, the pride of life. His soul draws from his spirit.

Ro:1:19: Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Ro:1:20: For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Ro:1:21: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Ro:1:22: Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Psalms:119:130: The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

When you turn out the light it gets dark. The body is depraved.

Rom. 6:6: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The body is the part that is kin to Adam.

Jer. 17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Sin turns your thinking into self-importance. You will become a slave to emotions. Your emotions are in revolt and all get mixed up.

When you get saved, God regenerates you spiritually and gives you eternal life. You were dead in sins but now you are alive unto God. Now God’s truth can be assimilated to your life. Eternal life is your present possession as you trust Christ.

Romans 8:2; Galatians 2:20; Phil. 1:21; Colossians 2;3,
As my will chooses to believe and trust God’s truth, I have the capacity to apply sound doctrine. When I get saved the light is turned on and now there is light in my soul. Our soul, will and emotions are in the light. Our body has been crucified, rendered dead and not to be the source of our operating. We still have to have the body but should be free from its influence. If God leaves you here to serve Him you have to have that body, but God has fixed it so you don’t have to run your life any longer. You can be free from its influence or you can choose to be influenced by it.

How do the spirit and soul interrelate? For the believer there is light in your soul and you have the capacity to apply the truth under the empowering of the Holy Spirit in His Word when you believe it.

Relationship of emotions:

Proverb:4:23: Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

All capacity of life comes out of the heart. God says it starts here.

Mark: 7:21: For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mark:7:22: Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mark:7:23: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

“From within” not from where you are but who you are.

Your emotions are designed to be responders to what your heard initiates. The mind and will were originally created to decide your course of action, and for your emotions to respond and then the body to produce the action. That’s the natural way.

Sin corrupted that way. The new man, instead of thinking, feeling, action, now takes the truth and by faith goes right straight to the actions. Your old sin nature corrupts the feelings so you can’t trust your feelings.
Emotions are followers and only respond to fact or fiction. They can’t discern between past, present or future. You can think of something in the past and get mad as though it just happened. You can think of something in the future and get anxious about it as though it already happened.
They get anxious about things that happened in the past as though they just happened. Emotions can’t tell that Frankenstein movies aren’t real. Emotions don’t understand.

Numb:11:4: And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
Numb:11:5: We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

When emotions are stretched they get out of shape. We remember (the picture gallery of your mind). Longing for, desiring result, in actions and emotions gets control.
The natural man thinks, feels and acts. The flesh acts from negative feelings.

Now, we are to walk in the spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. We can make a decision no matter how we feel about it. For example, when the alarm clock rings you can choose to go by your feelings or get up. The two different motivations are the motivation of the flesh and the motivation of the spirit.

A neckup check up

Depression is a universal malady. Moses, the greatest leader in all of history, was quoted by Jesus Christ said:

Matt: 23:2: Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
Matt: 23:3: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Moses gives a poor example of a prayer. It was dumb and inappropriate. He had anger and self-pity and was in the throes of despondency.

Numb. 11: 10: Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
Nu:11:11: And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
Nu:11:12: Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
Nu:11:13: Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
Nu:11:14: I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
Nu:11:15: And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

First Moses asks a question and then attempts to blame God. He begins with bad thinking and false, unrealistic expectations. “I,” “Me,” “I” shows self-pity. He is focussing on himself, not on God’s provisions thinking he had to do it all by himself.
You see no man as low until you come to the Apostle Paul in Romans 7.

Moses had all these false expectations and then displaced dependency. He reacted to the problem in anger and self-pity. He said, “Kill me.” We say, “I wish the Lord would come.”

Romans 8: 18-39

Right division is the key of what God is doing and how you can relate to it. If you replace self-pity with thanksgiving, you’ll never come out with depression. Your emotions are predictable. The way you feel is the way you think. Program your mind with Truth. The natural man gets his information from the world and that affects his mind, will and emotions.

Jer:17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

The soul is the emotions which are designed to immobilize the function of your will. You have to live in a supernatural way. Truth will make the choice to action regardless of your emotional state. Truth will bypass the emotions. The will of the renewed man will take action based on the faith of what God says.

Gal:3:3: Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

Misplaced dependencies You need to know how to have your mind programmed and how to think about your own identity. How you think about yourself will control how you live.

Rom:12:3: For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Soberly means realistically. Program your mind with Truth. We were created to have a dependency on God. God shaped a vacuum in the heart of everyone. [Only He can fill it.] We have a need for acceptance and significance. Those are identification issues.

What you depend on for identification and acceptance will ultimately control you. You live out of your identity. Your identification must be centered on Jesus Christ. No person will meet your needs unconditionally, nor yourself either. If you are depending on status or money or work, etc. those things are going to change. You need to have your identification based on something that does not change. How you answer that will affect your relationship with God , with others and with yourself. It is extremely important to know who you are.

1 Cor:15:22: For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

If you are in Adam, it will kill you. If you are in Christ, you are made alive. In Adam you are a natural man. You came into this world with a history of sinful ancestors. Your strength and wisdom was worldly and you were alive to sin. But… in Christ you have eternal life.

Rom:5:12: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

2 Cor. 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

In Christ you have a new resource – the life of Jesus Christ in you.

Do you know you have eternal life as a present possession? His resources are in us, in Christ. We have a positional change – a new relationship. We are a new creature (not creation which is anything created, dead or alive).

Eph:1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:.

We were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. We have a new past, a new present and a new future. God sees you in His Son. Keep that in your thinking and in your mind. Not keeping that in mind is why Christian people struggle in life and wind up in depression. When you try to cope by yourself to satisfy your emotions, you are doomed to failure. We are chosen, forgiven, redeemed, etc. Get this in your mind. It means something to God. We are complete in Christ with all spiritual blessings. Bless me? Give me? They are already yours. Put your dependency on Christ.

How to get in Christ? You have to know something first.

Rom. 6:3: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

The mechanics: God took you out of Adam and put you into Christ by one Spirit. He put you into a living union with God the Son.

Gal. 3:27: For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

We are robed in Christ. God sees you in Christ. People see you in clothes.

Rom. 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Rom:6:6: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom:6:7: For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom:6:8: Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom:6:9: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom:6:10: For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

You were baptized into His death at Calvary, not physically, but in the spirit, in your inner man. You were crucified with Him. Christ not only died for you but also AS you.

When you go on your own strength to cope with life, you have two options.
1. You can take the disappointments and dump them on others or yourself which programs your emotions and you go into depression. You feel shame and guilt. It’s a spiral to becoming a dead duck.
2. Good news. You didn’t have to do it. Stop. Quit. You can’t? Then either you are lying or God is a liar. “Let God be true and every man a liar.” (Rom. 3:4) You are not under the tyranny of sin. Your emotions get scared at a movie. I can choose and be radically changed. Do you live in that freedom today? That’s where freedom starts.

Rom. 6:4: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Col. 2:12: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Ge:23:4: I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

The dead is not an issue anymore.

We have five senses but only two have ability to recreate memory: seeing and hearing, the screen of your imagination. Remembering a past offense, a person gets mad. It’s all in your mind. Emotions say it must be happening again. No unresolved issues are put to bed with a shovel.

We are crucified, buried and raised to walk in newness of life. We are alive unto God.

Rom:6:4: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

You are getting something you didn’t have but you are becoming someone you didn’t used to be: a saint of the Most High God, a new and living creature. You are identified in Christ, raised to walk. That new life sits in heavenly places. That’s who you are. When you live in the conscious realization of the identification of whom God made you in Christ, how could you live anywhere but in the sunlight of thanksgiving?
God didn’t create His children to live in he darkness of depression. When you are over there it’s because you are walking in your own resources like you used to. The key is proper thinking of who God made you.

If you don’t rightly divide you’ll never understand that you are not Israel. Right Division shows you who you really are – a new creature.

Gal. 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

That is God’s plan and purpose. The simple truth. You were not created to imitate Christ in your own strength with your own abilities. You were created to contain Christ in your new man so He can live His life out through you.

So you have a choice. It comes down to a crisis of your will, a choice of your faith. You can try to live the Christian life on your own in which case you are doomed to failure and depression. Or, you can give up doing self-efforts and trust the Lord Jesus Christ who lives in you. Live in the truth of whom He says he has made you. Live in the real world.

Gal. 2:20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Glad to be M.A.D.

Heroes of the Bible suffered depression.  Elijah wsa the next most impressive man next to Moses.  He had the ability to perform miracles, healing, raising the dead, call for rain, call for fire to come down out of heaven.  He withstood 450 prophets of Baal in Chapter  18.  In Malachi we read that Elijah will be the first to return in the last days.  IN Rev. 11, he is a key figure in Israel s’ future..
He established a school of prophets.

His ministry forestalled and held off apostasy for decades through his school of prophets.  He knew depression and the defeat of depression.

I Kings 19:1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

1 Kings:19:2: Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

1 Ki:19:3: And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

1 Ki:19:4: But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

In chapter 18 he was on the top of Mt. Carmel but now under a juniper tree in the desert.  Just overnight he was in depression.  It is not a long process to get there. His problem is in verse 10.

1 Kings 19:10: And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

1. Series of bad thinking

2. Unrealistic expectations

3. Misplaced dependencies

He was depending on himself not remembering the 7,000 faithful who had not bowed the knee to Baal.  All he sees is himself.

4. Self-pity

Elijah blinds his eyes to the resources he has and maximizes the things against him.

Blindness toward the resources God has given you result in “Gloom, despair, agony on me.”  If truth sets you free, then error binds you.  Look for the error in your thinking.

Formula for the path to depression: bad thinking as your identification and provisions. Rely upon God’s perspective and not on a misplaced dependency on your own ability and strength; taking your focus off Christ and on yourself or someone else.  There is one reliable source and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your emotions are programmed to respond to the way you think.  It is your nature to have anger and fear.  One goes forward and one goes backward as motivators.  Fear and anger are not bad in themselves, only when you handle them in self-sufficiency multiplied by self-pity, rejection and disappointment.  We don’t base our doctrine on experience.  If and when rejection comes, instead of self-pity you react with thanksgiving, you will have peace.  Self-pity leads to depression.

You have a choice.  That’s good news to have a choice.  You can be a part of the solution.  You can’t change other people.  You have a capacity to solve the problem.

The Law says, “Let me whack you!”  you need to go to the throne of Grace for mercy. God knew it was coming and He took care of it.

Gal. 5:16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Walking in the flesh (in unbelief) is walking in your own sufficiency.

The only response Grace will accept is faith.  It will  be sufficient for you.  You are able to stand.  It’s enough.

2 Cor:9:8: And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

The only real sin you have to deal with is the sin of unbelief.

Gal:5:19: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Gal:5:20: Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Gal:5:21: Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:

The way to cure the battle in your mind (the works of the flesh) is to focus on the Source, trusting who God has made you in Christ.  The Law is fulfilled byliving by faith with a conscious dependence o the Lord Jesus Christ.  Mental attitude dynamics is getting involved in the living Truth.

II Cor. 10:3  For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

2Co:10:4: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

2Co:10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

“Strong holds” lead to depression that comes from self-dependency.  Verse 5 is the way to get rid of strongholds.

1. You have the thought.

2. You consider it.

3. You justify your need for it.

4. You decide to do it.

The problem begins in the thinking.  It becomes a cycle and the thought comes up again and becomes a habit.  When we instinctively learn to handle it, the problem becomes a habit.  How to get free from a strong hold?

Abnormal behavior begins after a period of time.  It stretches your emotions and eventually begins to affect you physically.

erse 5 tells how to break the cycle.  It is true of any addiction.  Knowledge and imaginations have run wild.

[RJ worked at a mission. He had a nightmare which seemed real even today.]

Hurt > resentment > their wrongness > retaliation > thinking all day about it (imaginations) get a strong hold.

A mental attitude sin is an involuntary mental process.  Imaginations are designed to program things in your mind.  By the intake of the Word of God it can be re-programmed by conscious thinking.  Cast down every thought and vain imagination (useless thinking, thinking not based on Truth) with the application of sound doctrine.

SELF-PITY DRIVES YOUR EMOTIONS RIGHT INTO DESPAIR AND DEPRESSION.

Break vain imaginations and every high thing by bringing them into captivity.  You can listen to one band on the radio but there are other bands.  Which station do you listen to – truth or error?  Do you think God is pleased with error?

Phil. 4:6: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

“Perfected forever.”  How much better can it be than Ephesians 1;3?  Which will you believe – truth or error?  People say, “Look what I did.  I deserve better than that.”

I Cor. 6:7: Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

Charity doesn’t take notice of the wrong it suffers.  There’s something more important – I can choose.

1 Tim:6:6: But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Phil. 4:11: Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

My contentment doesn’t come from circumstances.  Error says, “You can be the Christian you ought to be, just change.”

Phil. 1:21: For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

You tune the stations.  When you begin to think of something, stop and ask if you are in obedience to Christ.  If not, then bring it into obedience and take control of your thinking process.  Jesus Christ didn’t come to improve your old man.  He came to give you a new one.  Your new life is revealed more by your reactions than your actions. Remember that!  Circumstances reveal where we are walking.

The other side is negative - not bringing everything into captivity  - as a believer you act like an unbeliever.

The vanity (emptiness) of their mind;  A vacuum pulls in, your mind is bombarded with error and is alienated and disoriented toward God’s provisions.

Eph:5:14: Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

These Christians are like dead people, acting like the lost.  They shrivel up and die.  They are blind (cataract –scar tissue has no feeling).    There is a frantic search fo happiness.  They need the feeling.  They get despair.

WHEN YOU GET DEPRESSED, UNDERSTAND HOW YOU GOT THERE.  YOU CAN’T WORRY AND TRUST GOD AT THE SAME TIME.  IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE THANKFUL AND DEPRESSED AT THE SAME TIME.

HOW TO GET OUT OF DEPRESSION:  BE THANKFUL.

Warning:  watch your motives.  Change things for the right reason.  Live the grace life in spite of your feelings, no matter what.  There is a process to get depressed and a process to get out.  But first, your motive must be right.  Don’t’ try self-sufficiency.

1. Decide that you want to be free.

2. Acknowledgement  your dependency on Christ.

3. Give God access to your mind (study the Bible with a personal daily intake).

Get involved with others in order to grow.

Eph:1:18: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

Eph:1:19: And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

The renewing of your mind is a process.  When you stumble along the way, that’s not the end.

Phil.1:6: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

2 Co:2:12: Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

2 Co:2:13: I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

2 Cor:2:14: Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Rom:7:24: O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Rom:7:25: I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Paul is depressed but he changes his demeanor and gives thanks to God.  Thanksgiving is the answer.  It changes your mind and transforms your thinking process.

“Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

Error builds up a strong hold.  It is harder to break the next time.  It is a choice to focus on Romans 8:18,19.

Rom:8:38: For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Rom:8:39: Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

You take the thought, consider it,  justify it, and act upon it or stop it.  Don’t even consider it.  Go back to your thinking where it came from.

2 Cor: 2:14: Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

God doesn’t abandon you.  He didn’t lose His love for you.  You have His provisions.

How to Defeat Depression on a Daily Basis

There is a process to get into depression and a process to get out of it.

Jonah was the greatest preacher in the Bible if you measure greatness in the number of converts he had. Over one million Ninevites repented and God spared them. Instead of being elated Jonah became strangely depressed and enraged.

Jonah:4:1: But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
Jonah:4:2: And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
Jonah:4:3: Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
Jonah:4:5: So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

Nineveh hated Israel and many times had persecuted Israel. Jonah was a political statesman. Instead of rejoicing he got resentful. A psychologist would probe for a deep-seated problem in his life, an emotional let-down. He pouted, went into seclusion. He complained and brooded. So God will teach him a lesson.

Jonah:4:6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
Jonah:4:7: But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
Jonah:4:8: And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
Jonah:4:9: And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

He has self-pity and argues his case. He thinks he has a right to feel sorry for himself.

Matt:12:39: But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
Matt:12:40: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matt:12:41: The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Jonah is an important man in the plan and purpose of God. There he is, bitter and depressed. It took a thrilling conversion of one million people to turn into a miserable experience. Some depression is transitory and some is permanent, depending on the temperament but the formula is always the same.

If Jonah had trusted God for the outcome instead of demanding his own way he would not have had the self-pity. If he’d had a thankful heart, he could have never gone into despondency. Down in the city the Ninevites were rejoicing because God had spared them. Up on the hillside was the prophet in despondency.

The formula: thinking out of error. His mind-set was the culprit not the circumstance. The battle is won or lost in the mind. Relax and understand how the Word works. Troubles will come, there’s no way to shield yourself from them. Then when you multiply then with anger and fear which are designed to motivate you, you can respond and have a choice of the flesh program of self-pity and end up in depression, or, if you respond with thanksgiving you will have peace. You sow it, you reap it.

S – I – N. Therein lies the program: a choice of the flesh or the spirit’s programming. You can think the way God thinks or not. Just as there’s a path to depression, there is a formula to get out of it. You have to deal with self-pity.

Rom:8:22: For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Rom:8:23: And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

The natural response is fear and anger which are motivators to move you to deal with the problem.

Eph:4:26: Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Prov. 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The choice is how to deal with the problem: in self-pity or by faith in Thanksgiving. There are four things you can do to defeat depression and to keep it from reoccurring and gripping you.

1. Face the self-pity as a sin.

I Cor. 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

You have the responsibility for God to examine your life. You have doctrine, reproof and correction from God’s Word. People don’t usually appreciate the reproof and correction. You have to grow to where you appreciate the reproof and correction as much as the doctrine. Never excuse self-pity. Identify it as a sinful habit The more you indulge the easier it is to shift into that habit. The real sin of self-pity is unbelief.

II Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

You have a new identity. Faith says that you are a saint of the Most High God.

Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

I can depend on God’s sufficiency and have victory.

Rom. 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom. 8:38, For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom:8:39: Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When I am in Christ nothing can separate me from Him and I can rejoice. When self-pity starts, don’t put up with it for one minute. Don’t let yourself be focussed or absorbed in yourself.

2. Take the self-pity to Calvary. You can’t stop sin in your life but God already did.

Rom. 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom. 6:7: For he that is dead is freed from sin.

You are not a slave to sin whether you believe it or not.

Rom. 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ro:6:12: Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Ro:6:13: Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Ro:6:14: For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

The greatest protest against sin that the world has ever seen was hung on Golgotha’s hill 2,000 years ago. When God showed what He thinks of sin when He put His Son on the cross to die for your sin, He sacrificed Himself to pay for it. He put away sin.

Rom. 6:18: Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Rom; 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Rom. 6:2: God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Rom. 16, Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

You have a choice to obey the flesh or obey God’s Word and give thanks.

Rom:6:17: But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

3. You can choose to give thanks. This formula works for every sin. Sin feels good for awhile but sooner or later it gets you right down in the darkness with Jonah because the gourd died. The culprit is a warped thinking process. Thank God in the experience that produced the self-pity. Self-pity is sin. Calvary set me free. I’ve got resources. I can rest on whom God made me in Christ. That’s enough to make you give thanks.

I Thes. 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Phil. 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Phil. 4:7: And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Why things are going on the way they are:

1. Error in thinking
2. Unreal expectations
3. Misplaced dependency on self rather than on the One Who never changes

Why can I do it? Because God says to do it. I can choose to rely on what God says and I can give thanksgiving and be more than a conqueror.

II Cor. 13:8: For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

Joseph: Gen. 50:20: But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

You can depend on the identification God has given you. The moment of crisis is when you have to choose. The moment you realize self-pity you have to make a conscious choice to be where you ought to be. Make choices based on your thinking not on your feelings because that’s what God wants you to do. It is dangerous for thinking to follow emotions.

Moses: Numb. 11:15: And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

Moses was praying. Jonah was also praying. Prayer is not the answer.

Phil. 4;6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Ph'p:4:7: And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

You’re talking to a loving God who wants nothing from you but you. What do you think you have that God didn’t give you? He made it all and all is His. Not to be thankful is heathen.

You talk to God and he talks to you through His Word. Prayer activates the doctrine that is in your inner man. You can be thankful that you are saved and who you are in Christ. Make the choice applying the doctrine. Get outside of yourself. Give yourself to God and to serve somebody. Surrendering to Jesus won’t do it. If you pray with thanksgiving the prayer will help you because that’s what God says to do. Rom; 12:1 will give you joy and peace.

Rom. 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Three steps when depressed
1. Face it as sin.
2. Take it to Calvary
3. Thank God in every experience that produces the self-pity. Thank Him for your identification in Christ, for what He has done for you, for His suffering and that you are a conqueror.

Eph. 4:22-24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Eph:4:23: And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph:4:24: And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

II Cor. 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Every time you repeat the process, you have victory.

Have a plan of action. When King Saul was depressed he called for David to play music (I Sam. 16). You may also need a prop. Have a plan. I think of my grandchildren, Emily and the twins. Repeat the process and have some things to consciously to give thanks for. Let the Holy Spirit control you that way.

There are degrees of discouragement and despondency, some serious and severe. It is better to stop it early. How to stop it? Give thanks. Walk in the spirit and you won’t be depressed long.

Gal. 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Gal. 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal. 5:23: Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Those are the emotions that the Spirit works to produce in your life.
Whatever you depend on for a purpose and meaning in life controls you. Drugs, alcohol, money, status, religion. How can a little pill control you?

Chinese proverb: Man takes drink. Drink takes drink. Drink takes man. That’s how sin works. You depend on a pill to give you relief or happiness or numb your mind and to give you what you’re looking for. You depend on your job to give you status and happiness.

How would God get control of your life? The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit tells us things that have been given to us.

1 Cor. 2:12: Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

If I take God’s Word where I take the counsel of God’s Spirit who tells me what I need to know, I have saved $150.00 by not going to a psychiatrist. You can depend by faith in what the Holy Spirit has done and put your dependence in His sufficiency of what God has done in Christ. It’s the gift of God’s grace to you. Depend on that. That begins to control your life.

Gal. 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

How to help others

Sooner or later everyone gets depressed. For some it is transitory and for others it is a way of life. Even great characters in the Bible got depressed. Depression is not uncommon.

I Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

You are not being singled out. Life is life. You have to live with real expectations. We don’t get our doctrine out of experiences but out of the Word of God rightly divided. Truth will confirm itself in your experience. Error will deceive.

Jeremiah, a man of God, has been known as the “weeping prophet.”

Matt. 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? that am I?

Jeremiah was associated with the coming of Messiah in the mind of Israel. He saw his nation in apostasy. He was told not to pray for the nation because judgment was coming. No mercy. He delivered God’s Word to Israel and they didn’t like it. He weeps for them because of their rebellion.

Jer. 15:10  Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.

Jer:15:17: I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

Jer:15:18: Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?

This is self-pity. He feels helpless and hopeless. He’s in the depths of depression. The Lord understands when His people go into depression.

Jer:15:19: Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.

Jer:15:20: And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

Jer:15:21: And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

Jer:15:16: Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

There was no chastisement for his depression. Jeremiah had come to the extremity of his abilities.  Jeremiah’s hope was in God’s Word (verse 16). He had the thinking process of whom God had made him and he rejoices when He thinks of “Thy Word.”

Depression is unnecessary and is conquerable. You don’t have to live in depression. When it comes you can conquer it. Depression comes from our thinking patterns from our mental attitude toward the pressures of life. There is victory in our life over the tyranny of emotional revolt that leads down to depression. That victory is in a thinking process. You can reduce the formula for depression down to bad thinking. You have to get the error out of your thinking.

The two antitheses of Grace are unrealistic expectations and misplaced dependencies.

Realists’ expectations: to understand who you are and to live in the reality of God’s grace to you in Christ. You have real expectations because you understand what God is really doing and are not trying to talk God into something He isn’t doing.

When you’re not depending on your performance or on others’ performance you have grace thinking. When you depend on your own sufficiency you are “walking in unbelief.”

When the problem comes to you the question is not, “Is it right or wrong for it to happen to you” but, “What are you going to do about it?” You can respond by disappointment (the emotional motivators are fear and anger) and if you respond with erroneous thinking the result will be self-pity.

Injury, insult, rejection plus anger multiplied by self-pity equals despair and depression without exception. You can take out the incidences and remember them and get more self-pity. Emotions rely on the thinking. The main factor in every depression, the key factor is always self-pity. What you can change is the erroneous thinking and replace it with thanksgiving. “In all things give thanks.” In the injury, in the insult.  A lot of times you have to do it by faith. Life is much tougher than most evangelicals try to make you think.

You don’t thank God FOR those things but IN those things. How? By turning away from yourself and looking to God as to whom He has made you in Christ.

Thinking of self, your emotions will take over. When you think of whom God has made you in Christ your rejoicing will take over. That has everlasting value in spite of circumstances. Depression is not a cloud you have to live under. You can choose resentment and self-pity that leads to depression and tyranny of emotions or do what Colossians 2:11 so eloquently says:

Col. 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Depressed people need your help. How to help them?

They have erratic withdrawal behavior. They are irritable and rebuff you when they need you the most. Walk in love with them.

1.     Be there no matter how much they resist. They need you, not to talk or preach, just your physical presence.  They need to know they are not all by themselves, loveless and rejected.

2.     Don’t sympathize with them. Self-pity is what got them where they are.

3.     Project hope. They don’t see a solution. Remind them of Christ, who they are. Just a little beginning of hope.

4.     Be encouraging. Don’t argue.

5.     Get them to thinking of something beside themselves.

6.     Try to encourage them to do some activity.

7.     Don’t be too cheerful. (heavy heart – Prov.25:20)

8.     Get them into the Word of God. It’s the Word of God that gives the answer: reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness. You need to understand the doctrine. And work out of that. The real source of depression is unbelief. The real problem is that they are trusting themselves instead of Christ. Change what they are doing now to something else.

9.     Pray with them with a thankful spirit focussing on who they are in Christ. “God loves you and wants the best for you.” Pray audibly.

10. Spend time with them with patience and endurance. It takes time and involvement of your life. “Be there when they need you to be.” Live the Grace life.

Dispensational Bible Study: follow Paul as he followed Christ (I Cor. 11:1).

Eph. 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Eph:5:2: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

Walk in God’s love to you so that the love of Christ constrains you.

II Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

2Co:5:15: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

We know that we are unconditionally accepted and loved and are empowered by Him to love others. Walk in that love to them. When you understand His love for you, then you can walk in love to others. No one needs that love more than a depressed person. Human nature is to push you away. You have to have sound thinking in your life.

II Tim 1:7

Col. 2:9

Col. 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Rom. 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

II Cor. 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

II peter all things

You have all the fulness of God. Live out of the knowledge of God’s love in the completeness and sufficiency of God’s grace and what He has provided for you. Live out of the sufficiency of the Word of God and the truthfulness of God’s Word.

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

II Tim. 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Tim:3:17: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

You don’t psychology, or psychotherapy, or theology or the advice of the world. The sufficiency of God’s word is enough. Accept God’s Word as a way of thinking.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Error binds you under emotional tyranny. So replace error with truth. You will have victory. Emotions can even replace God’s Word.

What RJ preaches:

1.     The absolute sufficiency of God’s Word. That’s why the Bible version is an issue.

2.     The absolute complete sufficiency of God’s grace. The clarity of God’s grace is an issue.

You need to cultivate proper Christian attitudes and have a teachable spirit and to serve others, depending on Christ. (The three Cs: criticize, condemn, and complain.)

You need to depend on God to give the result. Trust Him to help people through you.

Rom. 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Paul was not ashamed of the gospel and had confidence in the Word of God.

You need a non-judgmental attitude that desires to restore people. God’s grace and love work  in our lives. Study, develop a skill to handle the Word of God. Use milk but let meat be available in the care of their good. Make conscious effort to be available. The key is:

I Thes. 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

The first time you see Caleb he is under Moses’ leadership and is 40 years old. He was chosen to go into the Promised Land to spy out the land with Joshua and ten others. It seemed to Caleb and Joshua to be no big deal to take the enemy. The next time you see him is when he is under the leadership of Joshua. At the age of 85 he is active in recovering land. There were only two survivors of the wilderness experience under Moses, Joshua and Caleb.

Josh. 14:9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.

Caleb had an optimistic spirit. He was as able-bodied as he had been at the age of 40. He lived in the consciousness of God’s sufficiency.

Numb. 14:24 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.

Jos:14:10: And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

Jos:14:11: As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

Jos:14:12: Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.

The spirit of faith is available to you as well as to Caleb. If you learn to understand God has made you, you will never feel defeated. The choice is up to you. You will be available to help others. They will see the spirit of faith living in you and then they know it can live in them..

You can be what others need you to be. Walk in Christ.

Download PDF THEY WHO ARE ISRAELITES (Romans, Chapter 9) When I look back on my life, I see a path that was not accidental. I was born in the land of Israel in 1957. The very fact that my parents brought me into the world is a foundational starting point, but no less important are the childhood years I was granted in this land its soil, its language, and the atmosphere in which I grew up. And yet, the true turning point in my life was not in my childhood, but years later. In 1979, I heard for the first time consciously and clearly about the love of God and His grace, grace revealed through our Lord Jesus Christ. It was not a philosophical idea or a passing emotional experience, but an encounter with a gospel. Thus I was saved. In 1980, something additional was opened to me: an understanding of what the apostle Paul describes as “the mystery” something kept in earlier generations, but revealed in this time. When I read his words, I understood that I was not facing another religious tradition, but a new divine administration of grace: Ephesians 3:3–5 (KJV) “How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;” That mystery was clear: the Gentiles and the Jews together are now called to the same inheritance, to the same body, and to the same promise in Christ Jesus by the gospel. At this stage I also understood the simplicity of faith, as Paul writes to the Romans: there is no demand for works, tradition, or past merits, but a call only to faith: Romans 10:9 (KJV) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” So I believed not out of pressure, not in search of a new identity, but out of recognition that this is the truth. That faith rested on the heart of the gospel itself, as Paul reminds the Corinthians: that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day, all according to what was written beforehand. Not a symbol, not a parable, but a historical act with eternal meaning. I believe that Jesus is the Lord. I believe that He is God manifested in flesh, entered into human history, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead for our justification. This is the same truth that begins already with the first man, when sin and death entered the world, but reaches its fulfillment in Christ the second man who brings life and righteousness. This is the gospel I heard. This is the gospel I believed. And this is the gospel I believe to this day. From that moment of faith, I learned to understand what also happened to me spiritually: the Holy Spirit baptized me into unity with Christ and placed me into one body the body of Christ. Not by a ritual, but by an inward divine act. Yes, I was also sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise in that moment when I believed. Not as a changing feeling, but as a fixed seal of belonging. And as it is said in Acts: “And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” Thus I stand to this day not by my own merit, not by works, but by grace. And this is my testimony. Acts 13:39 (KJV) “And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” ISRAEL AND THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans – Chapter 9 Romans 9:1–5 (KJV) “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.” I was born in 1957 in the land of Israel. There is nothing unusual about that; people are born all the time, including in the land of Israel. In 1979, in a place called Eilat, I heard for the first time the gospel of salvation: Jesus is the Lord and the Christ, who died on the cross for my sins and rose again for my justification. Thus I was saved in a few simple words. What is unique in the story is not me, but the focus on Israel and the revelation of the mystery. I was given the privilege to hear about the dispensation of the grace of God something not to be taken for granted. To this day Saul of Tarsus asks us: Ephesians 3:1–6 (KJV) “For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:” Have you heard of the dispensation of the grace of God? The term “dispensation” is not familiar to many, and is not well liked. People do not like the idea that in order to understand God’s plan one must distinguish between the dispensation of the grace of God and His unique program for Israel. Many prefer a god shaped according to their own thoughts and desires. The dispensation of the grace of God teaches simply that today Jews and Gentiles who believe in the Lord Jesus are baptized into one body without any difference. This is the heart of the matter in the revelation of the mystery. “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not” it may sound strange that the apostle Paul must emphasize this, but he does not do so out of personal weakness or lack of credibility. He presents a hard, sensitive, and controversial truth, especially concerning Israel, the law, and the gospel of the grace of God. Therefore he testifies that he speaks “in Christ” out of calling and spiritual responsibility. The epistle to the Romans, which deals with righteousness by faith, is the foundation of Christian faith. It is the ABC for anyone seeking to understand why the Lord Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again for our justification. In this epistle Paul also speaks about the mystery: Romans 11:25–26 (KJV) “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:” It was indeed a mystery kept with God: that a day would come when He would save Jews and Gentiles without distinction, and the Holy Spirit would baptize them into one body one assembly, the body of Christ. The apostle Paul wrote the epistle after the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob set Israel aside temporarily as a nation, not as individuals. For one born from a Jewish background, this is a difficult truth; but for today this time of grace God saves sinners without distinction. Paul writes that he is willing to be accursed from Christ for his people. This reminds me of my beginning in faith in 1979. Despite many attempts to preach Jesus, most people including my close family remained in unbelief. WHO ARE THE ISRAELITES, AND WHAT IS THEIR DISTINCTIVENESS? ISRAELITES—the sons in the flesh of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who is also called Israel. God chose them from among all peoples to be a light to the Gentiles. Deuteronomy 7:6 (KJV) “For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.” THE ADOPTION—for the first time they were called sons unto God. THE GLORY—God revealed Himself to Israel above the mercy seat. THE COVENANTS—the covenants were made with Israel, not with the other nations. THE GIVING OF THE LAW—the law was given first and foremost to Israel. THE SERVICE OF GOD—the instructions how to serve God and be separated from idolatry. THE PROMISES—including the promise of the Holy Spirit, given first to Israel. THE FATHERS—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and of them, as concerning the flesh, Christ came Jesus, God manifested in the flesh, of the seed of David. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “ACCURSED FROM CHRIST”? “To be accursed from Christ” means to be cut off from salvation. It does not mean transferring promises from Israel to the church, as certain teachings claim. The reason for the curse is that Israel, as a nation (not as individuals), did not receive Jesus as Messiah. “Stumbled at the stumblingstone”—that is, they stumbled, fell, and failed. Paul does not teach that the promises passed from Israel to the church. On the contrary, he warns against building theology on verses spoken to Israel but taken out of their context. Psalm 118:22 (KJV) “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.” This is the core issue: to stumble over Christ—and not receive Him. THE ISRAELITES AND THE GENTILES Romans 9:4–5 (KJV) “Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.” The Israelites and the Gentiles is a very important truth also in 2026. On the one hand, the world looks toward the Middle East politically and militarily; on the other hand, as people who believe that Jesus is Lord, we must listen to what is said in the word of God for this time of grace. Paul does not write for nothing: Romans 9:2 (KJV) “That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.” He writes this because a change took place in God’s plan. Many people to this day are not willing to accept the change and continue to preach as if Jews can be saved without the Lord Jesus Christ. They teach this out of apology for the wrong done to Jews throughout history. Others take the next verse out of its context: Romans 11:26 (KJV) “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:” Therefore it is important that we understand which “Israel” the apostle is speaking about, and most of all that we learn to distinguish between God’s promises to Abraham for Israel under the thousand-year kingdom and the time of grace and the assembly of believers, the body of Christ. This is a very difficult subject to explain in 2026, because many people still think their church organization inherited the promises God gave to Israel. In any case, Paul is not sad for nothing. From a religious man persecuting the assembly of believers, he was saved by the grace of God. I also sometimes ask myself why I was saved in 1979 while many people around me could also have believed. The answer is very simple: Psalm 118:22 (KJV) “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.” Jesus is the rock. We can accept that there is a rock, or we can fall upon it. Israel had, up to a certain stage, an advantage over the Gentiles, as it is said: the adoption; the glory; the covenants; the giving of the law; the service of God; the promises; the fathers; and of them Christ came as concerning the flesh Jesus, God manifested in the flesh, of the seed of David. This was Israel’s spiritual advantage over the other nations not because they were better people, but because of Deuteronomy 7:7–8—choice because of the oath to the fathers: Deuteronomy 7:7–8 (KJV) “The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” This was Israel’s advantage over the nations, until the Lord Jesus died on the cross to fulfil the law and redeem the believer from the curse of the law. These are very strong matters, especially when many people in 2026 believe that the law of Moses was also given to the Gentiles. It is very difficult for people today, including Jews who believe in Jesus and Gentiles who believe in Jesus, that Christ is the end of the law: Romans 10:4 (KJV) “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” Romans 9:6 (KJV) “Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:” To this day there is a great argument who is a Jew. According to Jewish law a Jew begins with a Jewish mother and so it passes. He is a Jew even if he does not practice Judaism at all religious versus secular. Over the years Jews became a kind of people with language and culture Sephardi or Ashkenazi, etc. Here it speaks about Israel, the nation twelve tribes, etc. Meaning not everyone who was of Abraham’s seed is a son of God, because the inheriting seed is through Isaac. There is a distinction in Scripture between the children of the flesh and the children of the promise. One can compare this to the difference between religion and faith. Many were born or baptized into the Christian religion. That does not make them saved, because salvation is only by the grace of God through faith. It is important to note again and again the meaning of the name Israel instead of Jacob: Genesis 32:28 (KJV) “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” Everything returns here to one very important point: faith. Paul emphasizes in verse 6 that the word of God has not fallen because Jewish leaders did not receive Jesus as Messiah, because after all, not all who are of Israel are Israel. Meaning not everyone has the same faith that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had. This is also why the Lord Jesus said: Matthew 3:9 (KJV) “And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” Many people think everything is automatic, or that because they baptized their children in water, their children were automatically baptized into covenant with God, and the same in the context of circumcision. THE SEED OF ABRAHAM—ISAAC AND JACOB Romans 9:7–8 (KJV) “Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.” The apostle Paul teaches us here, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, a foundational point in God’s plan: not everyone who is of Abraham’s seed according to the flesh is automatically counted as the seed of promise. We must remember this. Today, according to Jewish law, whoever is born to a Jewish mother is considered Jewish. According to the laws of Orthodox and Protestant/Reformed churches, every child or girl/boy baptized in water is automatically baptized into covenant with God. That is how they teach, and therefore they also claim that their church received the promises of Israel. Therefore it is very important that we listen to the words of the Lord Jesus under this dispensation of grace through the apostle Paul regarding this important subject. “In Isaac shall thy seed be called” meaning: the promise does not pass through nature, birth, or law, but through divine choice and promise. Children of the flesh versus children of promise. Ishmael was born before the promise of the seed, connected to a human solution, and is not counted as the seed of promise: Genesis 16:15 (KJV) “And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.” The true seed is that which is born out of what God promised, not out of what man produces. Meaning there are religions that teach that infant baptism in water can produce salvation or closeness to God. Another very important point: the promise came before the law. The promise was given to Abraham long before the giving of the law at Sinai. Therefore it is not based on commandments, not dependent on keeping law, and cannot be annulled by failure under the law: Genesis 12:3 (KJV) “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Galatians 3:16–18 (KJV) “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.” The promise to Abraham speaks of one, not many, as many think. The One is the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore we speak about the difference between God’s promises to Abraham through Christ Jesus for Israel and God’s promises to Abraham in Christ Jesus for the assembly of believers, the body of Christ meaning righteousness by faith alone. God started with a promise, not with law. The law came later and does not cancel the promise. Therefore: the children of promise come before the children of the flesh, and this is the basis for understanding Israel, the Messiah, and the dispensation of the grace of God. Romans 9:9–11 (KJV) “For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)” The seed of Abraham under the dispensation of the grace of God is a very important subject. The religious Jew speaks about circumcision. The religious Christian speaks about infant baptism, which allegedly came instead of circumcision. The apostle Paul speaks about the purpose of God according to election, not works. God’s plan to save people by His grace through the Lord Jesus Christ is not cancelled just because Israel repeatedly rejected the testimony of the twelve apostles concerning the kingdom of heaven on earth. The reason is because God’s plan is not based on the works of men, but on the promise of God given long before. That is the principle here. “but of him that calleth” everything rests on the will of God, His plan, and His calling. Romans 8:28–30 (KJV) “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” The calling comes through the gospel (not through law or works): Romans 10:14–17 (KJV) “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Meaning people must hear the gospel of their salvation. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob calls people today by hearing the gospel. The calling is not mystical; it is not connected to some church, but is spoken in the word of God as the Lord Jesus committed it to the apostle Paul. The calling is a calling of grace, not works: 2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV) “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” The calling is a calling of faith in Christ: Romans 9:24 (KJV) “Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?” Today the calling is open to Jews and Gentiles alike, and the response to it is faith, not natural belonging. Romans 10:8–17 (KJV) “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 (KJV) “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” 1 Corinthians 1:9 (KJV) “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” God calls us to fellowship with the Lord Jesus, not to membership in one religious organization or another. The calling concerns far more than the believer’s salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” The concept of a new creature under the dispensation of the grace of God speaks of a new identity in Christ. Man is now defined: not by his past Christian, Jew, Muslim, etc. not by the flesh water baptism, circumcision, etc. but by what God has done for him in Christ in His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. Romans 9:12–13 (KJV) “It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” Paul is not speaking here about personal preference or emotion in God, but about a divine principle in the plan of salvation not according to the flesh. Everything stands on the grace of God, not on natural advantage or birthright. Jacob was chosen not because of his merits, and Esau was not rejected because of wickedness; it speaks here about calling and purpose—“loved / hated”—“loved” = chosen to carry the promise; “hated” = not chosen for this line for this role. Jacob and Esau represent here, one Israel and the other the nations. Not everyone has the same role in God’s plan, but in the end all are measured by faith. Under the dispensation of the grace of God the principle is that the flesh does not determine, but grace and faith are the basis. “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated”—this is not a story of personal preference but of a divine plan built on promise, grace, and faith, not on the flesh. In one sentence: God chose the line of promise, built on one Seed—the Lord Jesus Christ—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and as Paul says: 2 Timothy 2:8 (KJV) “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:” Romans 15:8–12 (KJV) “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.” IS THERE UNRIGHTEOUSNESS WITH GOD? Romans 9:14–21 (KJV) “What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” If God chooses according to His will, some people think it is not fair. This is not about choosing which individuals will receive the gift of eternal life and which will not. Exodus 33:19 (KJV) “And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.” This verse was spoken after the sin of the golden calf, when Israel was not worthy of grace. From this verse we learn that the grace of God and His mercies are sovereign and not based on human response. This is the verse Paul explicitly quotes in Romans 9:15 to show that there is no unrighteousness with God, but that salvation rests on mercy, not works. “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy” meaning our will to serve God or our running to do something for Him cannot bring salvation. It is in the hand of God who shows mercy He, in His great mercies, saved us: Ephesians 2:4–5 (KJV) “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” Now let us speak a little about Pharaoh: Exodus 9:16 (KJV) “And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.” The verse was spoken to Pharaoh in the midst of the plagues of Egypt, and it emphasizes: God uses Pharaoh’s evil so that His power would be revealed, and His greatness would be known in all the earth. God did not create Pharaoh like that, but used him so that the riches of His grace for Israel would be known to all. Everything stands on mercy, not works. Paul quotes Exodus 9:16 in Romans 9:17 to show that God is sovereign and His promise for Israel stands even against human resistance as in the case of Pharaoh. Romans 9:24 (KJV) “Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?” The epistle to the Romans was written for Jews and Gentiles in one body, for the assembly, the body of Christ. Here we come to the more important part in chapter 9: Romans 9:22–25 (KJV) “What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.” The sovereignty of God allows Him to endure the wrath of men as in Pharaoh’s case so that His will would be fulfilled. God did not replace Israel with the Gentiles. God, in the riches of His grace, used Satan’s blindness and calls today Jews and Gentiles into one body. 1 Corinthians 1:23–24 (KJV) “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:27–31 (KJV) “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” Here too God used the evil of the rulers of this world—those who thought that if they crucified the Lord Jesus, God’s plan would not be fulfilled. But God, in His great grace and love, saves us on the basis that Jesus died on the cross and rose again. 1 Corinthians 2:7–9 (KJV) “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Romans 9:24 (KJV) “Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?” These are not church people who were baptized in water. These are Jews and Gentiles who received Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and the Holy Spirit baptized them into unity with Christ: 1 Corinthians 12:13 (KJV) “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” “NOT MY PEOPLE” Romans 15:4 (KJV) “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Romans 9:25–26 (KJV) “As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.” “Not my people” and “not beloved” speak of a time when there was a separation between Israel and God, but not a rejection forever. Every time the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob restores Israel, it is not because of their status, but because of His faithfulness and the promise to the fathers. (Hosea 2:23; Hosea 1:10) Meaning that if at one time God chooses to show His wrath and at another time the riches of His grace, it is all based on His sovereignty and His plan to save people, because if everything depended on men, we would have no hope. Romans 9:27–29 (KJV) “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.” The meaning of the verse is that quantity does not determine anything with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, even if Israel be as the sand of the sea. The existence of the remnant is the central fact, not the size of the nation. God does not save people according to quantity or their right in the flesh. By God’s sovereignty He always saves people through His grace and on the basis of their faith. Most of the nation rejected the gospel of the twelve apostles about Jesus Christ. Most of the nation rejected the testimony of the apostle Paul about the atoning death of Jesus on the cross. If it were not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and His plan to save mankind, we would have been almost as Sodom and like unto Gomorrah—meaning without hope. Thanks to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and the Lord Jesus, the apostle Paul received the gospel of the grace of God, by which Jews and Gentiles can be saved. No one takes the place of the other, because it speaks of a body of believers whose existence was kept secret until it was revealed to the apostle Paul. This is also the testimony the apostle Paul gave to the Jews in the synagogue: Acts 13:38–39 (KJV) “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” THE RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH IS OF FAITH Romans 9:30–33 (KJV) “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Isaiah 28:16 (KJV) “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” The Gentiles—nations of the world: Ephesians 2:12 (KJV) “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:” Why did Israel, with all its spiritual advantages, fail spiritually, while the Gentiles attained righteousness without even seeking it? “The Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness… even the righteousness which is of faith.” The Gentiles did not seek righteousness through law, covenants, or works. They received righteousness as a gift of grace, by faith alone. This is not about moral superiority of Gentiles, but simple reception of the gospel of the grace of God. The law of Moses was not evil. The problem was using the law as a means to obtain righteousness. Israel followed after the law of righteousness in the power of the flesh religious zeal, etc. “Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law.” Israel sought righteousness as wages, not as a gift, not as the fruit of faith. “For they stumbled at that stumblingstone… and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Christ Himself is the stumblingstone—not because He is a stumblingstone in Himself, but because He requires faith alone. To the believer, He is a sure foundation; to the one who seeks to justify himself, He is an offence. The Gentiles were saved not because they sought, but because they believed. Israel failed not because it sought, but because it sought in the wrong way. The same stone saves the believer and causes the self-trusting to stumble. This is the move from law to grace in God’s present dispensation.

THE EARLY DAYS OF PAUL'S MINISTRY by Dov Avnon The early days of Paul's ministry (The key to understanding the Dispensation of Grace) Dear reader! I use the term 'The early days of Paul's ministry' and not, as many say, 'Paul's early ministry,' because the Lord Jesus Christ gave the apostle Paul one ministry and not two. Regarding the fall of the nation of Israel, or perhaps better said, Israel's partial blindness, it occurred shortly before Paul was saved and not throughout the entire book of Acts, as many still teach. The fall of Israel as a nation is the reason that Christ from heaven saved Paul and gave him the dispensation of grace. If you understand this part, it will be much easier to comprehend that all the truths/teachings written in Paul's letters, from Romans to Philemon, are written to and about the Church, which is His body. Rightly dividing the word of truth is not about drawing a line in Paul's letters between different groups of believers or bodies of believers so it appears as though Paul had two ministries. 2 Timothy 2:15 is about studying—presenting yourself so God can approve what you are doing or saying under grace. It is about doing things for God without the need to be ashamed. Rightly dividing the word of truth goes back to 2 Timothy 2:1: '...be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.' 2 Timothy 2:2: 'And the things that thou hast heard of me.' Yes, it goes back to one important truth: to make as many as we can see the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery that Christ from heaven gave to the apostle Paul. 25Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:29Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. Jews and Gentiles in one body By Dov Avnon You will find in a few places in Paul's letters to the Churches the doctrine about Jews and Gentiles in one body. After knowing the doctrine of salvation and the assurance of the believers in Christ, the position of Jews and Gentiles under the dispensation of grace is a very important doctrine that I am afraid many Bible teachers no longer teach. 11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; Paul had to remind the believers in his letter to the Ephesians of a very important truth that he was teaching the churches already in his first letter. In the time past, before the beginning of the dispensation of Grace, the Gentiles could know the real God only through Israel. But now it is different. This change in God's dealing with the Gentiles is already mentioned in Paul's letter to the Galatians, which was Paul's first letter to the Churches. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3 Now, after the beginning of the dispensation of Grace, there has been a great change in God's dealing with the Gentiles. They are now Children of God only by faith and put on Christ in the same way that a Jew has to do. 1 Cor. 12:13. It is now under this new dispensation that all those who are in Christ are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3 Paul became an apostle of a new dispensation because God temporarily set Israel aside as a nation. So now, any Jew who trusts Christ as their Savior becomes a member of the same body as any Gentile who does the same. This is because God is now dealing with sinners on an individual basis and not with nations based on the Old Testament covenants. So Paul asks the churches, mostly made up of sinners from the nations, to remember a few important things that it seems many have already forgotten by 2025 Paul is talking here about Gentiles in the flesh, just as in other places he spoke much about Jews in the flesh. For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh: 2:29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Rom 2 Sinners from the nations = Gentiles, or the sinner Jew = the nation Israel, are both under what Paul called the dispensation of grace: the mystery among the Gentiles. 25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Col. 2 When Paul said that he became a minister and that God gave him the dispensation of Grace, it was for both Gentiles and Jews who trusted Christ as their Savior. In order to understand it, it is important to take a look at the book of Acts. When Christ was on earth, He did not come to teach the Gentiles (John 7:35) but to the lost sheep of Israel. When Peter, on the day of Pentecost, talked about repentance (Acts 2:37-38), it was to the nation of Israel with some proselytes (Acts 2:10). Then we come to Peter, James, and John, the apostles from Jerusalem with the gospel to the circumcision. They were the first to talk to a Gentile but just for a while. ACTS 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. ACTS 11:1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. ACTS 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. This repentance of the Gentiles is NOT part of the dispensation of Grace that Christ gave to Paul. It is not a part of what Paul said: the mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you - this will come soon but not yet. 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 11:20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. Acts 11 From reading the above verses, we learn that Peter and the other brethren from Judea had the commission to go only to the Jews. Some went also to the Gentiles, but let’s not forget they did not have any gospel to them and could only tell them what Christ gave them for the Jews. It is Paul who, for the first time, received the mystery among the Gentiles. Paul, Jews, Gentiles, and the synagogue ACTS 13:42-48 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles – ISAIAH 42:6, 60:2 – From reading the words of Isaiah, we learn that the nation of Israel was chosen among the other nations to be a light to the Gentiles through the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. But they rejected this purpose and persecuted those who talked about it to the nation. 1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. Acts. You see it is with Paul for the first time that salvation goes to the Gentiles as part of a new dispensation. ACTS 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord. ACTS 21:19 And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry. ACTS 26:20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 26:21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. 26:22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. Some, after reading the words 'repent and turn to God,' started to build their own doctrine as if Paul, like Peter at Pentecost, was teaching repentance and baptism as part of the earthly kingdom. I suggest anyone who understands the spirit of Paul's letters and his gospel to read these verses: 1 THESSALONIANS 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 2 TIMOTHY 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. TITUS 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Now, after Christ saved Paul, the Gentiles did not have to go to the synagogue, as some did, in order to hear something about the living God of Israel. Now they can get it directly by listening to Paul's gospel. There is a great difference between the synagogue, the temple, or the tabernacle. All are supposed to be appointed meeting places with God. But for Israel, God appointed only one place where He would meet them. 22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Exodus 25 The temple in Jerusalem in Paul's days or the synagogue of the Jewish religion was not that meeting place. When Paul went first to the synagogue of the Jews, it was not to meet the leaders of the Jewish nation and to speak with them about the return of Christ to earth with His kingdom. (See the difference with John 3:1-9). There were, in Paul's days, many synagogues around. It was the meeting place, till today, of the Jewish religion after the destruction of the first temple. The synagogue in Paul's days was the only place where people read God's word: 21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. Acts 15 It is in the synagogue of the Jews and not in the Greek temple that we find people reading from God's word. Sometimes when I am listening to some of the arguments that brethren are using in order to promote their two bodies or two group theologies, I am amazed at how ignorant people can be when it comes to some simple truths about the place of the synagogues during the early days of Paul's ministry. When we take the verses about Paul visiting the synagogues during the early days of his ministry, we get a global picture of what he was preaching. However, it is from his letters to the Churches of the dispensation of God’s grace that we learn what Christ wants us to make all men see. ACTS 9:20 ….preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. ACTS 13: …preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews 13:14 …..went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 13:15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, [Ye] men [and] brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 13:38 …. And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. So again – the synagogue of the Jews is not the appointed place by God to meet the leaders of Israel. It is the prayer house of the Jewish religion. Paul did not go there to perform any kingdom miracles or to tell them about the return of Christ to earth with His kingdom and that they should repent and be baptized. It is more important to see what Paul said to the people when he was visiting Jerusalem. 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. Acts 23:6 Nothing about the earthly kingdom or the promises of the return of Christ to earth but only: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. Acts 23 And this is what Paul did later as he wrote to us in the letter to the Churches of the dispensation of grace: 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification Rom. 4 at that time ye were without Christ Now after we understand more about terms like synagogues and Gentiles during the early days of Paul's ministry, let's see what he is going to remind the Gentiles in the body of Christ: 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: Gentiles: 1- without Christ, 2- being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, 3- and strangers from the covenants of promise, 4- having no hope, 5- and without God in the world: Jews/Israel: 1- Christ came first to Israel, 2- Israel the chosen nation, 3- God made the covenants with the fathers of Israel, 4- Israel had the hope of the resurrection. It was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Paul asks members of all time to remember how it used to be before the dispensation of grace started. I remember my first years in the Netherlands in 1980. When I told people that I am from Israel and saved through the blood of Christ, some told me that they thank God for Israel because through them they received the Gospel. This was for me a good opportunity to tell those people that it was the opposite. Israel as a nation rejects Christ. It is because of the dispensation of grace that Christ gave to Paul that the Gentiles have an open door to be saved. Paul and but now 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. ROMANS 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; ROMANS 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. ROMANS 16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. Paul wants us to remember the difference: how it used to be and how it is now under the dispensation of Grace. The point is that Christ on the Cross accomplished everything for us, but it was not known until Christ himself revealed it to Paul. Peter and but now 1 PETER 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God. 1 PETER 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. When we are going through the words of Christ in Ephesians 2:13, it is important to know the difference between the NOW of Paul, which represents the present days of the dispensation of grace, and the NOW of Peter, James, and John, the apostles from Jerusalem, which refers to the future days after the end of the dispensation of grace. He is our peace: 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances, for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace. We can find much ignorance regarding what Paul wrote afterwards to the Churches. The reason for this carnal ignorance is not because it is not written or because Christ was not clear when he gave Paul the dispensation of grace. It is because you and I, in 2025, are living in a time when Satan has already introduced to the world one of his false teachings: dividing Paul's ministry into different bodies or groups and, as a result, rejecting some of his letters as if they were not written to the body of Christ. This is false teaching. It is false because, as a result, people are learning to reject the ordinances that Christ gave to Paul for the Church. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 1 Cor 11 It is about the teaching or some parts of it and not about the people. There is no doubt in my mind that people like Ethelbert William Bullinger or Charles Henry Welch were great Bible teachers. Like there is no doubt that Johannes Calvijn or John Nelson Darby were great Bible teachers. Or Adolph Ernst Knoch. All of them, each one in his time, wrote many books and gave many Bible studies and have many followers even till our days. God uses people to spread His gospel like Paul says: 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 2 Tim. 2 No one is free from errors in their teaching, but some errors are not just a mistake but a part of a complex of wrong teaching that went into the world. When I use the term false, I am talking only about those issues that are contrary to what Christ gave to the apostle Paul under the gospel of God’s grace.

Fast Facts About Angels By Thomas Bruscha "Angel" means: Messenger: Angels are the servants of the Lord doing service to God - Hebrews 1:7,14. They have been used to deliver messages to people - Genesis 19:15. Holy Angels carry out God's will on earth or heaven - Genesis 28:12. They report to God and give account - Job 1:6; 2:1. They praise and worship God - Psalms 148:2; Revelation 5:11,12. They comprise God's army - the "Heavenly Host" - Daniel 8:10. Angels are called: "Sons of God" - Job 1:6; 2:1 "Heavenly Host" - Luke 2:13 "Holy Ones" or "Holy Angels" - Daniel 4:7; Matthew 25:31 "Watchers" - Daniel 4:17 Their Being: Angels are celestial (Heavenly) beings - I Corinthians 15:40. They are just one kind of race of many heavenly beings such as: Seraphim - who according to Isaiah 6:2-7 have six wings and praise God's holiness. Cherubim - who according to Ezekiel 10:1-15 have four wings and surround God's glory. The Four Beasts - of Revelation 4:6-8 who may or may not be one of the above; these also have six wings. There are many differing descriptions of demonic type beings - Zechariah 5:5-9. This is the only mention of winged women in the Bible and remember it's demonic! There are also heavenly animals mentioned in scripture such as horses - Revelation 19:11 Within the Angels are Ranks of Authority: Archangel (meaning: "Chief") As is "Michael" among the Holy Angels - I Thessalonians 4:16; Jude 9 And "Beelzebub" prince among the devils - Matthew 12:24. Principalities - As above, an office held by a Prince, Chief among others - Ephesians 1:21. Thrones - An office held by one who would be a regional King - Colossians 1:16. Powers - An office held by one having legal jurisdiction - Ephesians 1:21. Might - An enforcer; as in military or police or judge - Ephesians 1:21. Dominions - Assigned governmental authority over a territory - Ephesians 1:21. These same offices of varying authority exist on the earth, visible to us as Kings or Presidents and Legislators and Governors and Judges and Police. The same exists in the heavens, invisible to us but just as real - Colossians 1:16,16. Heavenly counterparts to earth are warring the heavens - Daniel 10:12, 13,20,21. How Angels Appear: They are "Spirits" - Hebrews 1:7. They are not made of the earth as we are - I Corinthians 15:48. They are "Invisible" - Colossians 1:16, II Kings 6:17. They are spoken of as "Men"; never as women or as children - Mark 16:5; Daniel 9:21. They however, are not necessarily sexless: As men, fallen angels have procreated with "the daughters of men" - Genesis 6:1-4. They were and are created by God to be celibate: God did not create them to marry nor to be given in marriage - Matthew 22:30 They are "Wingless" i.e.: the Bible never says they have wings. So we assume they don't and there is no reason to assume otherwise. They are powerful; exceeding man in strength and ability - Psalms 103:20; II Peter 2:11. They possess the ability to appear as "ordinary men" - Hebrews 13:2. They sometimes appear as men and yet there is something that distinguishes them as Angels - Genesis 18:1-3...19:1. Perhaps they appeared larger than normal men - Genesis 6:4; Revelation 21:17. They also have the ability to appear as "supernatural men" with radiant glory - Luke 24:4. They are "Created" beings - not born - as is said of the Cherub Lucifer - Ezekiel 28:15. They were created in Genesis 1:1 because they viewed the rest of creation - Job 38:6,7. Because they are Spirit Beings they do not and cannot physically die - Luke 20:36. This is why God created hell - Matthew 25:41 Because they are Spirit Beings they never age. This is seen by the fact that the angel Gabriel appeared to Daniel - Daniel 8:16 then approximately 500 years later he appears unaged to Mary - Luke 1:19,26,26. As Spirit Beings they do not take up space: In Mark 5:9 there were a "Legion"=6,000+ in one man. They are always viewing what happens on the earth - Daniel 4:17; I Corinthians 4:9. They have been wondering, trying to figure out the prophetic plan of salvation God promised mankind in the earth - I Peter 1:12. There is much joy among the Angels; over God's victories - Luke 15:10; Revelation 12:12. Their estate is Heaven - they are called "The Angels of Heaven" - Matthew 24:36 And yet some of them left - Jude 6 They are associated with the stars - Revelation 1:20; 9:1. Most likely they live on and rule territorially within the stars - Amos 5:26. They are not to be worshipped! - Revelation 22:8,9. They are not to be idolized! - Exodus 20:4,5; Acts 7:43. They are not to be prayed to! - II Samuel 24:17. Prayer in scripture is always directed to God - Matthew 6:6; Luke 11:2. They are not to be looked to for guidance! - Isaiah 47:13. God's Holy Spirit through His written Word leads and guides us - Ephesians 5:18. They are not sent, nor are we to receive a gospel message from Angels today! - Galatians 1:8. Our worship, our obedience, our trust and dependence which we owe to God aloone, is the desire of Satan and his Angels and is therefore the source and the reason behind all idolatry - Isaiah 14:12-14 Assignments of the Angels: They have been sent from God to bring messages to certain people - Daniel 9:20-23. Since Jesus Christ is called "The Word of God" - John 1:1; there were times in the Old Testament when He appeared himself as "The Angel of the Lord" - Exodus 3:2. Angels were also sent to assist certain people - Acts 12:7-10. They were sent to protect certain people at particular times - II Kings 6:15-18. They were also sent to inflict punishment at other times - I Chronicles 21:16. Angels were assigned to Nations - Daniel 12:1. Some were assigned to Children - Matthew 18:10. Angels will be assigned to Churches - Revelation 1:20; 2:8,12,18; 3:1,7,14. Angels are seen throughout the Book of Revelation executing God's wrath - Rev. 15:1. They will be used at the second coming of Jesus Christ to gather Israel back to their promised land - Matthew 24:31. The references to time in the above statements, alluding to the past and future days, such as "were" or "have been" and "will be" are deliberate. Since the Children of Israel were God's people and the heirs of Salvation; angelic ministry is especially associated with that Nation and God's Kingdom blessings promised to them upon this earth. Keep this point in mind as we consider this final question: Do Members of the "Body of Christ" have Guardian Angels? Paul's epistles are written to the "Body of Christ" which comprises all believers through the "Gospel of the Grace of God" (Jew or Gentile) from the beginning of his special ministry until a future day in which the "Body" (whether asleep in the grave or alive) will be called up into the air to meet our Lord Jesus Christ in the heavens. (Acts 20:24; I Corinthians 12:27; I Timothy 1:12-16; I Thessalonians 4:13-18.) This church called "The Body of Christ" is a "New Creature" distinct from God's people of Israel who were called "An Holy Nation." The church which is Christ's Body was brought into being for God's secret purpose called "The Mystery" - "Which He kept hid from ages and generations but now is made known..." as Paul writes; "To the intent that now unto the principalities and power in the heavenly places might be made known by the church the manifold witness of God." (Ephesians 1:22,23; II Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15; I Peter 2:9; Ephesians 3:1-10) In other words, God's purpose in saving us today in this "the dispensation of the grace of God" is for the prpose of teaching the angels in heaven, things that even they never knew concerning the many sides of God's wisdom. Most importantly it teaches the Angels how God's wisdom in the Cross has defeated Satan and openly displays Satan's ignorance as God reveals the triumph of His wisdom and powever over him. (I Corinthians 2:7-9; Ephesians 1:8; Colossians 2:13-15) In God's grace to us, He is using us to teach the Angels, and He will display us in the Heavens forever to demonstrate to the Angels "the riches of His kindness in His grace toward us" - Ephesians 2:4-7. Since God's program for us involves teaching the Angels, and since this truth exposes the defeat, failure and doom of the devil and his angels, this truth and those who know it are in a spiritual warfare with "spiritual wickedness in high places" - Ephesians 6:10-12. The armor God has given us is not "guardian Angels," but is the "truth," "righteousness," "peace," "faith" and "hope" found in our position in Christ. Furthermore, II Corinthians 10:4 tells us that the "weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." They are not carnal (fleshly), but spiritual, for we do not fight against flesh and blood. Our weapon is spiritual. It is the Word of God. Therefore Jesus Christ through Paul, his Apostle to us, warns us over and over not to be deceived; nor lured into the worship of Angels; nor to be spoiled of our rewards through Angels appearing to teach us another gospel or any other doctrine not found in Paul's epistles for us. (Colossians 2:18; Galatians 1:8; II Corinthians 11:13-15; I Timothy 4:1,2) Interestingly, Colossians 2:18 implies that those who would have you believe a message from an Angel or to adore the Angels in worship, they have never even seen an Angel, though they may testify that they have seen an Angel. To the contrary, the Apostle Paul says much about Angels observing, listening and learning of God's grace from us: "We are made spectacles to the Angels..." - I Corinthians 4:9. "We shall judge the Angels" - I Corinthians 6:3. We ought to obey the authority God has established "because of the Angels" - (perhaps because they are watching our obedience) - I Corinthians 11:10. Our position "in Christ in heavenly places" is a show of the kindness and grace of God to the Angels who never had seen such grace - Ephesians 2:4-7. And it was God's intent in forming the Body of Christ to teach the Angelic Host about His "manifold wisdom" - Ephesians 3:10. Paul acknowledges that his words are heard before "the Elect Angels" - I Timothy 5:21. Today, we have the privilege and the ministry of using "the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God" (particularly "the Word of His grace" to us;) and by using it we can assist God in "spoiling principalities and powers" by the preaching of the Cross and thereby, through faith, save those (Jews or Gentiles) who were part of the kingdom of Satan - "the power of darkness" and "translate them into the Kingdom of God's dear Son." (Ephesians 6:17; Acts 20:32; Colossians 2:15; Ephesians 2:8,9; Colossians 1:12-14) As God's purpose for Israel centers around His kingdom in the earth, so God's purpose for us - the Body of Christ centers around His kingdom in the heavens. Angels were used to help Israel by informing them and protecting them as a nation, in fulfillment of God's intent for the earth. However, today God is using the church which is His Body to help the Angels by informing them and warring against the spiritual wickedness in high places in fulfillment of God's intent for the heavens. The more one understands the uniqueness of the age in which we live and how it is that we battle in a spiritual warfare for the heavenly places the more insight is gained as to the ministry of Angels today. We the Body of Christ are teaching and warring in their behalf in the heavenly places. We accomplish unseen victories as we "stand fast in the Lord and in the power of His might" using as the weapons of our warfare "the sword of the Spirit" and "praying always" for "boldness" to proclaim "the mystery of the gospel." From that point of view, why would we have guardian Angels? Rather than Angels helping us, God has given unto us something much more comforting and powerful. He has given to us His Holy Spirit who strengthens us with "power" and "might in the inner man" and "seals" us as God's possession unto the day of our redemption; all to His glory. (Ephesians 3:14-21; Ephesians 1:13,14) Instead of protecting us from all the evils that may befall us in life we are instructed to be "filled with the Spirit" and to learn that God's grace is sufficient. In fact we begin to understand that in our weakness God is made strong in us so that while we may suffer need, go hungry, be afflicted with pain, or suffer loss; we "can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth us!" What a testimony this is to the power of God's grace in us, both unto man and the Angels. (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:22,23; II Corinthians 12:7-10; Philippians 4:11-13) There is an amazing truth which can only be received by faith. We are told in scripture that our afflictions in this life are working for us. As we walk by faith, motivated by grace, strengthened by God's Spirit, guided by His Word through all the difficulties of life we will be rewarded "a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." If guardian Angels prevented such afflictions, they would be working against you, robbing you of rewards, and the glory God receives through His working in your life. (II Corinthians 4:16-18; Romans 8:16-18; II Timothy 2:9-13; 4:6-8)

"I like to write about the Bible, about God's word. Today, I want to talk to you about 'water baptism.' I am not going to argue about whether you should participate in any religious ritual or not because I am not concerned with what millions are doing. I care more about letting people know about the Gospel of God's grace that Christ from heaven gave to the apostle Paul." 1 Corinthians 1:17 “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.” Whether we will go through the ritual of water baptism or not, we cannot change the truth that Christ did not send Paul to baptize. Would Paul be able to be a member of the "Baptist or reform organizations" of our days? Maybe yes. Paul himself was baptized in water and he baptized others. Acts 9:18 “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.” 1 Corinthians 1:16 “And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. I have been living in the Netherlands for the last 42 years, a lifetime. I will soon be 67 and have spent most of my life in the Netherlands. Why? Maybe because of the easy life. However, I have used my time here very well to preach the Gospel of God's grace. No, we do not have large church meetings. After I started teaching the truth of women's head covering for this dispensation of grace in 2009, based on 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, many left. No, they did not leave the gospel of God's grace. They just chose not to follow Paul in this matter. Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. I wanted to talk to you about water baptism, the ritual, and standing for the truth of "one baptism" as mentioned in Ephesians 4:5 - "One Lord, one faith, one baptism." There is a significant difference between knowing the truth, agreeing with any truth, or standing for it. Standing for the truth is far from easy in our days. I was 22 years old with a Jewish background in the land of Israel when I stood for the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Years later, when I learned about the dispensation of Grace and the gospel of God's grace, I took a stand for this truth once again. I married a woman whom I knew would stand with me for God's truth. It was not easy, but we have been together for 42 years. I am writing these words not because I care to argue about what others teach or believe. We do not engage in such discussions in the Netherlands. I have spent my life presenting the truth of the gospel to those who are willing to listen. Nowadays, most people use the internet to follow my video preaching. They choose not to visit the fellowship for various reasons, such as distance or not standing for the truth. There is a lady whom I know. She was a child when I spoke with her parents or mother about the gospel of God's grace. She lives not far away and follows the online studies, if I am not mistaken, she also visits a large local charismatic church. She knows the truth, but she does not stand for it as I would. Some try to justify it by saying “but I talk about it with other members etc” "Water baptism" is not just water; it has become a religious system. Compromising with the truth does not always happen because you don't believe it. It is often because people want to be part of the majority and avoid persecution. Galatians 6:12 “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.” Many are teaching salvation by grace alone. Many will say that Paul is the apostle to the gentiles. It does not say that the same “many” are willing to stand with Paul for the truth of one baptism see Romans 6:1-11. Last Sunday, I learned new things. We had a visitor, an old member whom I met when he was 25 years old. Now he is a grandfather. 1 Corinthians 12:27 “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular .” We are in one body with everyone who is saved and has been baptized by the one spirit 1 corinthians 12:13. members in particular will be when the church comes together. 1 Corinthians 11:20 “When ye come together therefore into one place, - today with many using only the internet to learn about God's word. Not many know what is “” members in particular”. I did not see this brother for some years. They left for some reason but sometimes he still followed the teaching through the internet. His wife is joining another church that is not teaching the gospel of God's Grace as I do. Some people will say “I want to have fellowship with fellow believers” Others say “When it is Sunday I want to join a church service”. Sometimes when you are living In a small community this is the place where you will meet other members of the same body. Some need say that they need social contact. We spoke about our children his children, they learned in the past about the Gospel of God's grace in Sunday school. He left the fellowship in 2008. During our conversation, this brother mentioned his children. He said, "My daughter is more focused on the world." In our place, when someone is not interested in a spiritual life with Christ, we say they are more worldly. Yes, even those who grew up with sound doctrine can later choose not to read the bible, have a fellowship, or simply walk in the spirit. Most people care only if they are saved. In our small village, some will say “I am happy that I baptized my child as a baby” or “ I know he is a member of the covenant” The conversation was mainly about his son. They live in a small Dutch reform town with about 20 churches. Although it used to be a village, with families having 5-10 children, it has grown into a town. Some churches have more than 1000 people on Sunday mornings. Years ago, I led their Bible study group, but it was challenging for them economically to stand for the truth, especially if they had a small business. People were hesitant to buy from them once they knew they no longer part of the Dutch reform theology. Sometimes even the preacher would support this attitude. Do not buy from those who are not coming to our church building. In some villages with Roman Catholic and Protestant populations, it was common to have two bakeries, each serving a different group of people based on their religious affiliation. Many young people want to get married, have children, and build their homes. There are not many who are into the teaching about the dispensation of grace. Some have found their beloved ones, who may be non-believers or come from different religious backgrounds. In my life, I have witnessed people entering and leaving relationships. I have seen marriages end in divorce because one partner wanted to stand for the truth while the other not. Being married to an unbeliever is a different story. 1 Corinthians 7:2 “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.” Read chapter 7 When your partner is an unbeliever, it can be challenging or even impossible to raise your children in the ways of the Lord. It may also be difficult to maintain a home fellowship like we had all those years. Romans 16:5 “Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ.” I began writing about "water baptism" not because of the water itself, but because of the principle of standing for what you believe in. Are you willing to stand for anything in your life? Our lives are built on those who have stood for the truth in the past. Imagine how different my life would be if Brother C.R. Stam had not stood for the truth of the gospel and if I had not known https://bereanbiblesociety.org/ this just a sample. Last Sunday we had visitors at our small home fellowship. Old fellow brethren that I have known for more than 30 years. They were young people when I met them and told them about the gospel of God’s grace. Now they are fathers and grandfathers. Like always, we ask first about the children. Like in every family, some will continue in faith, some not. Some will stand for the truth of the gospel, some not. Last Sunday I learned new facts. While talking about the children, some of them choose to marry an unbeliever, and some of them get married to a person from another church organization. We know that today people get divorced, even saved people, so I do not want to say that just getting married to a saved person gives any advantage. You will always need to work on your marriage and walk in the spirit as much as possible. 21Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Ephesians Chapter 5 So here we are again. A young man or woman who understands that Christ gave Paul the dispensation of grace gets married to a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. They stand for infant baptism, and if you want to participate in the Lord's Supper, you have to be a church member. This involves going through the church confession procedure. The Dutch Reformed Churches confess Infant Baptism. It is not just about water. It is a large system. If you live in a small village with many Dutch Reformed churches and you want to be part of the majority, you need to join this church. You don't need to do anything if you choose to stand for the truth, but in many situations today, young people just don't want to be alone. There are hardly any so-called grace churches today, and not many people will start a church at home like it used to be. They are in love with someone, and this is what matters to them. I was surprised to hear that those children who grew up in the grace teaching and now have a Dutch Reformed partner. Some of them became a church member to please the wife or the man or for the future of the children in this village. In order to be member of those churches and if you was not baptized as a child. You will need to go through Dutch reform adult water baptism ceremony. Like I said before, I don't care what others are doing. It is just sad to hear how far people can go. 1 Corinthians 1:17 “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.” No effect - infant baptism sounds reasonable for millions of people. It is a rigid religious system. It is not easy for people to leave their religious system because in many cases, it means having conflicts with their natural family. "Why Does It Take So Long to Explain Infant Baptism?" - "I Will Be A God To You And To Your Children" helps many to understand and accept infant baptism. In reality, the biblical and Reformed view on infant baptism can differ. But who really cares in our days about God's words to the apostle Paul? "God promised to be a God to believers and to their children. He gave a sign to Abraham to illustrate that promise, and he repeated the promise in the New Testament and gave a new sign to illustrate that promise." This is a brief explanation that millions in the world are following. I know all about it because of my Jewish background. I still remember the first days in 1979 after I heard about the Lord Jesus Christ. I was so happy to go home and tell my parents the good news in my life. For them, it was a sad day. Philippians Chapter 3 2Beware of dogs, …. 3For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, no confidence in the flesh. 4…. have confidence in the flesh….. Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 7But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; It is not easy to criticize others. Most people on earth never hear the truth of the gospel or are not willing to follow it. I thank the Lord today that I was able to build my life with the truth of the Gospel. I thank the Lord today that I was able to be an instrument in His hand and to share with people the greatness of the Gospel of God's grace under the dispensation of grace. 1 Corinthians 1:17 “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.” 1 Corinthians 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” To all those who know the truth and for some reason starting to compromise just remember that those “spiritual wickedness in high places” will do anything to prevent you from telling others the truth of the gospel of God’s grace. 10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places .
